Ursula Kamper,Lead Speech and Language Therapist with 24 years of experience, mainly working with autism explains:

Why Speech Therapy?

Speech is a key building block in communication. Having the appropriate speech and communication skills are key to forming and maintaining healthy relationships, engaging in lifelong learning, and providing the language skills to deal with everyday scenarios.

At Miki Autism School, we provide techniques and strategies for children and to communicate more effectively. Speech therapy allows the children to target and improve on areas of weakness in fluency, clarity and comprehension, sound production, early language skills, and much more.

We provide a personalised and caring speech therapy program that is tailored to parents specific needs and concerns. We would love to help you on your way to communicating clearly, effectively, and comprehensively.

What is Speech Therapy?

A Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) works to prevent, assess, diagnose, and treat speech, language, social communication, cognitive-communication, and swallowing disorder in children and adults.

SLT’s treat many types of communication and swallowing problems. These problems can include speech sounds, expressive and receptive language, social communication, voice, fluency, and feeding and swallowing disorders. SLT can treat a wide variety children and disorders.

We work at Miki Autism School with the children to create a person-centered approach to target areas of concern and work with them towards improving their ability to effectively communicate their wants/needs, as well as swallowing abilities.

What do sessions look like?

We take a synergistic approach to maximise outcomes. Our therapy models customise programs based on our childrens’s level, individual situation, and needs. We work closely with our multidisciplinary team members to help our children reach their goals.

When beginning speech therapy, children will be evaluated assessing the child’s level, individual needs, goals, and situation. Following the evaluation period, the SLT will cultivate a personalise plan to help our children to achieve their goals.

The SLT will work with our children and their personalised plans to develop a therapy schedule based off their needs, as well as availability. The duration is of each sessions is 30min, however may vary depending on their personalised plan. Parents are encourage to contact their medical aid to check if the services will be covered.
