Adaptive CAPS
The Adaptive CAPS Curriculum is a flexible and inclusive version of the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) used in South African schools. It is designed to meet the diverse learning needs of students, especially those with barriers to learning, including neurodiversity.
By utilizing this curriculum Miki Autism School adapts teaching methods, themes, and progress assessments to ensure all learners can progress at their own pace while achieving essential educational outcomes. It promotes an accessible, supportive learning environment that fosters independence and skill development.
IEP
An Individualized Education Program (IEP) at Miki Autism School is a personalized learning plan designed to meet the unique educational and developmental needs of each student with autism.
The IEP outlines specific goals, accommodations, and support services tailored to help the student succeed academically, socially, and behaviourally. It is developed collaboratively by educators, therapists, and parents to ensure a structured and supportive learning environment. Regular reviews and updates are conducted to track progress and make necessary adjustments for the student’s growth and development.
AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication)
This term refers to methods and tools that support our children with speech or communication difficulties express themselves.
It includes both low-tech options, like picture boards and sign language (Tiny Handz), and high-tech solutions, such as speech-generating devices and communication apps. AAC supports children with autism, enhancing their ability to interact and engage with others.
Tiny Handz at Miki Autism School
Tiny Handz is a specialized program at Miki Autism School designed to support children with autism in developing essential communication skills using sign language.
Recognizing that many children with autism face challenges in verbal communication, Tiny Handz provides a structured, engaging, and interactive approach to learning signs that enhance expression, understanding, and social interaction.
Through visual aids, hands-on activities, and personalized learning, Tiny Handz helps students bridge communication gaps, reduce frustration, and build confidence in expressing their needs and emotions. The program fosters inclusivity, ensuring that every child, regardless of their verbal abilities, has a voice.

Spell to Communicate
At Miki Autism School, we embrace Spelling to Communicate (S2C) as a powerful method to support non-speaking, minimally speaking, and unreliably speaking individuals in developing purposeful communication.
S2C is a structured, evidence-based approach that uses letterboards or keyboards to help students spell out their thoughts, enabling them to express their ideas, participate in meaningful conversations, and engage in academic learning.
Our trained practitioners and communication partners guide students through motor learning and regulation strategies, helping them build the skills necessary for accurate and independent spelling. By focusing on motor planning rather than cognition, S2C unlocks the voices of students who have previously struggled to communicate their intelligence and understanding.
At Miki Autism School, we integrate S2C into our curriculum to foster confidence, independence, and self-advocacy in our students. We believe every individual has a voice, and S2C is one of the many ways we empower our students to share their thoughts, learn, and thrive in a supportive environment.
